Custodian and Groundskeeper

Custodian and Groundskeeper, Part-Time

15-20 hours per week | $20/hour

The Historical Society of Cheshire County is seeking a dedicated and versatile Custodian and Groundskeeper to join our team. This role combines groundskeeping, facility maintenance,  janitorial services, and administrative duties to ensure our historic buildings and grounds are safe, functional, and welcoming.  This position reports to the Executive Director.

Scope of the Position

The Society owns and operates a museum in three historic buildings along Main Street in Keene, NH– the Ball Mansion, Wyman Tavern, and Bruder House.  The ideal candidate will be a hands-on problem solver who takes pride in maintaining our facilities to the highest standards. The facilities manager will work independently while reporting to the Executive Director and collaborating with our Facilities Committee.

 

Key Responsibilities

 
  • Maintain the grounds at the Society’s three buildings year-round.

  • Maintain cleanliness of high-traffic areas (restrooms, kitchen, program spaces) weekly as well as offices and storage areas monthly.

  • Collect and prepare recycling and trash for Monday pickups.

  • Inspect and monitor building interiors and exteriors for maintenance, preservation, safety, and ADA compliance issues.

  • Manage the inventory and upkeep of the Society’s tools, supplies, and equipment.  

  • Act as point of contact for routine professional services and maintenance such as fire extinguisher inspections, pest control, elevator inspections, electrical and plumbing etc.

  • Assist staff with setup and breakdown of spaces and/or grounds for programs and rentals.

  • Provide regular reports to the Executive Director, staff, and Facilities Committee (a committee of board members and other volunteers who work to support the staff in maintaining and preserving its buildings and grounds).

  • All other duties otherwise assigned by the Executive Director

Seasonal & Specialized Tasks

  • Assess buildings, grounds, and mechanical systems for preventative maintenance needs by doing quarterly walkthroughs with the Facilities Committee.

  • Coordinate seasonal cleanups in Spring and Fall with volunteers and staff.  

  • Attend Facilities Committee meetings as the key staff person. 

Qualifications

  • Experience in facilities maintenance, janitorial services, or related field preferred

  • Basic knowledge of building systems (plumbing, electrical, HVAC)

  • Ability to perform minor carpentry and repair work

  • Strong organizational and communication skills

  • Physical ability to lift, bend, and work outdoors in various weather conditions

  • Valid driver's license and reliable transportation

  • Flexible schedule to accommodate occasional evening/weekend events

  • Basic computer skills- email, Google, spreadsheets etc.
