Vermont State Representative Michelle Bos-Lun Visits Kurn Hattin

Vermont State Representative Michelle Bos-Lun made a special visit to Kurn Hattin Homes to speak to the middle school civics class. Her presentation, Making Laws, Making Change, outlined the process of bringing a bill to the House of Representatives and the steps involved in creating new laws. She highlighted an example of how she and a group of students successfully passed a law designating the bear’s head tooth mushroom as the official Vermont state mushroom.

When Rep. Bos-Lun asked the class why laws are important, one student replied, “Laws can help people. The seat belt law can save lives, and the no littering law helps prevent pollution.”

Kurn Hattin Civics Teacher and Student Council Advisor Deborah Velto said, “I feel it’s important to introduce students to the law-making process and a person involved in that process so the seeds are planted for future involvement in their communities. I want our students to understand their civic duty, and to know that their ideas matter, their voices can be heard, and they can make a difference.”

On March 26, Kurn Hattin students will visit the Vermont State House to sing for the House Chamber and observe the legislature at work.
